Nufarm integrates sustainability strategy
into 5 year strategic plan
Nufarm is one of the world’s leading crop protection companies, and adopted Cleaner Production and an annual Health, Safety and Environment report over a decade ago.
In 2008 Nufarm seized the opportunity to become signatory to the Plastics and Chemicals Industries Association (PACIA) Sustainability Leadership Framework for Industry as a further step in its quest to become an international leader in sustainability.
Nufarm’s Laverton production plant
“There is no doubt that PACIA’s Sustainability Leadership Framework has enabled us to step up to another level,” says Nancy Francis, Nufarm’s Environmental Chemist.
“It is helping us to more formally integrate our improvement efforts and to embed sustainability initiatives into our business and our five year strategic plan”.
“We are taking advantage of the Framework document and all the associated programs offered by PACIA.
While we have been consistently pursuing efficiencies in energy, water and waste, the Framework and sustainability programs are helping us to accelerate our progress.”
In mid-2008 Ms Francis attended PACIA’s Energy Management in Practice course and, like fellow participants, utilised a survey to gain internal feedback on the company’s sustainability practices. The energy course information was invaluable, but so also was the survey for its telling results.
Nufarm is a great Australian success story. Founded and based in Australia, Nufarm Ltd is now one of the world’s leading crop protection companies, with operations in some 25 countries and sales to more than 100.
Ranked eighth largest by global sales, it employs more than 3000 people. Its largest manufacturing plant is located in Laverton, Melbourne.
Sustainability has been a driver of Nufarm’s operations for more than a decade, and the company was one of the first signatories to the Sustainability Leadership Framework for Industry launched by the Plastics and Chemicals Industries Association (PACIA) in 2008.

A Sustainability Leader
Survey returns surprising and mixed results
Some 30 people across Australasia from shop floor staff to senior management completed the survey on leadership, people and motivation, data analysis, decision making and communication. Nufarm was surprised at the very mixed results and realised there was room for improvement and action. “Generally, senior management thought the company was performing better than blue collar staff,” Ms Francis says. “Overall, we were seen as strongest in decision making and information data analysis, but we needed to improve in two key areas: ‘people organising and motivation’, and ‘communication about the value of sustainability’.”
Concerned to address these fundamentals, Nufarm chose to use the Framework and ran a half day workshop with American sustainability management champion, Dr Paul Tebo for its 20 Australasian managers.
Sustainability versus business
At the start some managers expressed uncertainty regarding sustainability versus business practices, but the session concluded with unanimous agreement that sustainability was integral to good business practice. As stated by Nufarm’s Group General Manager of Operations, David Pullan, the integration of sustainability was the responsibility of all managers. Workshop participants agreed on five steps: 1. Establish new metrics for the business. 2. Distribute the PACIA Framework throughout
the business. 3. Set up cross functional teams to examine packaging,
a major element of Nufarm’s business
4. Share company objectives between different functions and business units, to enhance communication and understanding
5. Develop education and training and create a common language so all staff understand sustainability, and how it fits with the company.
Ms Francis is also gathering workshop feedback, particularly regarding where Nufarm should concentrate its efforts. A five year business strategy meeting with senior managers has placed sustainability as an inherent part of the strategy.
Nufarm has also since assessed its position along PACIA’s Sustainability Roadmap, and believes it is now at Destination 3 (Driven and setting goals), which means it is:
• Setting improvement goals and achieving good outcomes on single priority issues in the workplace.
• Affirming its corporate vision and values for sustainability.
• Generating visible support, commitment and leadership from top management to drive sustainability thinking.
• Engaging internal champions and sustainability coalition.
“Nufarm’s really taking that leadership stance and getting engagement up and down the business,” Ms Francis says.
“The Framework helps you to be constructive and analytical, to really assess where you’re at and to have an objective way to measure what you’re doing.”
Sustainability workshops with Dr Paul Tebo
Dr Paul Tebo, the former global Vice President - Health, Safety and Environment at DuPont, is internationally recognised for his key role in the transformation of DuPont following Greenpeace’s criticisms, particularly the international award-winning strategy of pursuing ‘zero waste and emissions’. Dr Tebo was influential in the development of PACIA’s Sustainability Leadership Framework, and regularly meets with PACIA members wanting to integrate sustainability in their organisation. This is program is made possible through the Sustainability Covenant between PACIA and EPA Victoria.

Nufarm achieves major cuts in water, energy and waste
Continuous improvement in water, energy and waste management has resulted in Nufarm cutting water consumption by 30% and piloting a project to reduce a trade waste stream by up to 90%.
The company’s achievements include:
• Water consumption has been cut by 30% in the past few years with reuse and changes to pumps; a further 10% reduction is targeted.
• Implementing a pilot program to investigate cuts to trade waste and water use by recovering up to 90% of 2,4-D and phenolics.
• Progressively replacing hot water bath operations with enclosed hot box units has cut steam usage from 127 kg per hour to 21 kg per hour, an efficiency increase of 84% in energy and water.
• Energy use may be further reduced through improved energy efficient cathode coatings used in electrolysers in the chlor-alkali plant.
A more sustainable supply chain creates business opportunities
The Paul Tebo workshop encouraged Nufarm to step up initiatives with its supply chain in line with PACIA’s three Strategies for Action within the Framework. In doing so, the company has also gained significant business opportunities, some of which are still in progress. Nufarm:
• Up scaled some raw material purchases from 200 litre drums to bulk containers of at least 1000 litres, cutting down on packaging, transportation and costs.
• Requested drum suppliers stop using drum liners that prevent drum reuse or
reconditioning.
• Sought out a new supplier for drum reconditioning, changed drum cleaning processes and created a new revenue stream from feedstock. Rationalised suppliers in other areas, reducing costs by up to 50%.
A snapshot of PACIA’S Sustainability Leadership Framework
The Sustainability Leadership Framework is designed to assist PACIA members who want a sustainable business positioned for long term growth in an increasingly competitive and constrained market.
Over 30 companies including Nufarm became signatories to the Framework in its first year, committing to its goals, gaining access to PACIA’s expert staff, advice and networks, engaging with fellow visionaries and benefiting from informative programs and expert forums. Twelve major partners support the program, including the EPA in Victoria,
