On your brainstorm page list as many words you can think of that have some connection to weather.
How many words can you think of in two minutes?

FYI - Weather is the state of the atmosphere at a given time and place.

So, what is weather?
• The weather is just the state of the atmosphere at any time, including things such as temperature, precipitation, air pressure and cloud cover.
• Daily changes in the weather are due to winds and storms. • Seasonal changes are due to the Earth rotating around the sun. • Weather happens when the sun heats the land, water, and the
air at different rates.
Weather results when the four basic ingredients of the sun, air, water, and land interact
with each other.
Concept connects to what is weather.

Sun heats land, water, and air at different rates.
Different materials heat up and cool down at different
rates.
Concept connects to how wind works.

Our Experiment
Using the heat lamp to heat the soil and water, take t emperature of each material in 3- minute intervals to determine rate of temperature increase.

Temperature Heating Up Starting Temp. 3 min. 6 min. 9 min. 12 min. 15 min.

How did our experiment illustrate the Big Idea of this lesson?
Warm air rises. Cold air sinks. Concept connects to how wind works.

4. Draw what the balloon on the bottle actually looks like when it’s placed in ice water.
5. Explain what you think was happening with the balloon. Use the following words to include in your explanation. Let's review... How did the balloon go

from this

to this??

Although invisible, air has pressure.
Things want to move from high to low pressure.
Concept connects to how wind works.

Sun heats land, water, and air at different rates.
Warm air rises and creates an area of low pressure.
Cold air sinks and creates an area of high pressure.
The sinking cold air sweeps in to take the spot of rising warm air. That movement of air is called wind. Wind creates changes in temperature and pressure.
Concept connects to how wind works.
