บทที่ 1 adverse drug reaction อาการไม่พึงประสงค์จากการใช้ยา (averse drug reactions) อาการไม่พึงประสงค์จากการใช้ยาเกิดขึ้นมานานควบคู่กับการใช้ยา อาการเหล่านี้อาจเกิดขึ้นเวลาใด ก็ได้เมื่อมีการใช้ยาเพื่อการบาบัดรักษา มีผู้ป่วยที่ต้องเข้ารับการรักษาในโรงพยาบาล เนื่องมาจากอาการไม่พึง ประสงค์จากการใช้ยานี้ 1.7 – 5 % และผู้ป่วยอีกจานวนมากที่เกิดอาการอันไม่พึงประสงค์จากการใช้ยา ระหว่างการรักษาตัวอยู่ในโรงพยาบาล มีผู้สารวจพบว่าอุบัติการของการเกิดอาการอันไม่พึงประสงค์ของ ผู้ป่วยขณะเข้ารักษาตัวอยู่ในโรงพยาบาลจะอยู่ระหว่าง 10 –20 % อาการไม่พึงประสงค์ที่เกิดขึ้น จะรุนแรงมากน้อยต่างกันแต่ส่วนมาก (60 –70 %) จะมีอาการไม่ รุนแรง เช่น อาการระคายเคืองต่อกระเพาะอาหาร ผื่นคัน ง่วงนอน นอนไม่หลับ อ่อนเพลีย ฯลฯ แต่บางครั้ง อาจทาให้ผู้ป่วยเสียชีวิตหรือพิการ เช่น การเกิด aplastic anemia จากการใช้ chloramphenicol , anaphylactic
